Positive/Negative Consequences
For this section of the portfolio
I decided to approach encouraging positive behaviors and discouraging negative
behaviors on an individual level with a behavior chart. These are most often
used with individual students who need help identifying their behaviors and are
benefited by seeing how they have acted throughout the day. Programs like this
can be adapted for different behaviors, or even to be used with a whole class.

This example chart follows the same idea but is targeted
towards very young students, so charts used with elementary age students will likely
include higher level behaviors and can be sectioned into different parts of the
day for recording what happened throughout the day. This chart uses consecutive
positive behaviors as a source of a reward, but this can be take a step further to include both reinforcement of positive behaviors and discouragement of negative behaviors- When a student finishes one part of the day, like math time or gym class, they receive a smile, neutral, or frowning face for that box. At the end of day each is worth a number of point, smiles can be +1, neutrals =0, and frowning is -1. Using this system students will become accustomed to identifying their score and how high or low it is in conjunction with their behavior that day. This system allows for both positive and negative behaviors to be addressed and simple number rewards to coincide with their behavior. An extended reward can be if they earn a high enough score they can eat lunch with the teacher, for example. An important addition to the example chart is having room for comments, which helps different teachers who are working with the student, or the parents, understand why they received their score.
